The area around Somerset East offers pristine Wild fly fishing in the Karoo. The Bankberg Troutfishers Club manages the Bestershoek dam and the three dams at the Glen Avon Farm, which are open to day visitors. These dams vary between 1½ hectares and 3½ hectares, and offer good still water trout fishing. Fish are stocked as fingerlings or yearlings and then naturally fend for themselves, allowing fishing for "wild trout". Small stream fishing as well as fishing the premier water, Mountain dam, is available only if accompanied by a guide, or with a member of the Bankberg Troutfishers Club. Note that access to some of the waters requires a bakkie or 4x4. Proper permission and club procedures must be followed to access all waters. Only fly fishing is permitted on these waters. Visitors are required to obtain a daily permit at a cost of R 150.00 per rod per day. Although catch and release is encouraged, a day ticket entitles the angler to keep two fish per day Guided Fly Fishing Rates: • 1 fisherman: R 1700.00 per day • 2 Fishermen: R 1200.00 per person per day • 3 - 4 fishermen: R 1000.00 per person per day • More than 4 fishermen: Rates to be discussed • ½ day | 1 - 4 fishermen (4 hours): R 900.00 each Observer fee: R 250.00 per person per day (includes lunch & drinks) If you have any questions, we can answer those through GetMyBoat’s messaging platform before you pay.
